Land of the Longhorns!

We arrived safely in Austin, Texas and discovered that we are camping in Texas University back yard. The campus is only 4 miles down the road. For us to get downtown we have to drive by the huge campus.
Our drive in was uneventful and quite surprising to find that we were driving into what they call in Texas, Hill Country. I've always had this idea that Texas is a flat prairie land with cowboys roaming the vast area's. Imagine our surprise when we arrived in this area to find rather large hills.
The drive in took us past the downtown area which gave us a sneak preview of the city and its cityscape.

You can see the State Capital in the picture below. It is made of Pink Granite and the colors are pretty intense even from this distance. They are very proud of the fact that it is the tallest Capital building in the country, including our Nations Washington Capital building in DC.

As we drove through Texas University campus we spotted the football stadium. They had a baseball game scheduled so there were people out tailgating hours before the game. They love their baseball in Texas. On the evening news they have highlights of High School baseball games.

We look forward to exploring the city and the "Hills" that surround it. Austin is know for Live Music and we intend to hear some good music while here. The only downside is that this weekend is graduation weekend at Texas University and the news is saying that some parts of the downtown area will be closed for ceremonies. There are many areas outside of the city that we are going to explore.
