Today we drove out of the canyon and decided to stay at a local campground to take care of a few things before we continue our journey. Laundry and business. We are also re-looking at our next destination as we investigate the pros and con's of each location.
I have tons of pictures to upload so lets start where we left off.
Here are the pictures that we took from Oklahoma City, OK. Our time in OK was short but we enjoyed the city and people. We were very moved by our visit to the Memorial where the Aurthur Murry Building once stood and 168 people lost their lives. I remember watching the whole thing happen before my eyes that morning. I had just started my new job at Smith Litho working night shift. That morning I awoke and turned on the TV to watch a little news when it all started to unfold. I couldn't take my eyes off of the TV and couldn't believe what had just happened. That day of April 19, 1995 changed our lives as Americans because it showed how vulnerable we were. Terrorism had hit the US. Walking along the reflecting pool and looking at the rows of chairs was very moving. It didn't surprise me to see Reta teary eyed because I too felt this knot in my throat. There is an Elm Tree that still stands proud after it survived the blast from that day. The Journal Building that is across the street still has the twisted metal of the fire escapes hanging on the side of its building. You can't help but feel the impact that the blast of the bomb made in the landscape, buildings and lives.
The city also has its own version of a Riverwalk. They call it Bricktown and is only a mile long but is lined with restaurants and shops. We hit Toby Keith's restaurant. He's a country singer for those of you that also didn't know. It surprised us that we were in there because for those of you that know us we don't ever listen to country music. It was a nice place and it also gave me the opportunity to try my first fried bologna sandwich. Interesting but I don't think I would have it again.
Oklahoma City was a quick stop for us and I think we would have stayed longer in the area to see more. There is something about tornado's that don't really go well with Motorhomes. Honestly we were pretty concerned, okay, scared to go through a bad storm that first night. When you don't have a lot between you and the outside it makes you feel very vulnerable.
In case you want to see more about the memorial here is a link to their website:
