Our journey out of Zion put us on the road relatively early so that the heat would hit us when we would be close to our destination. Our 310-mile trip would take us through the tall cliffs of Zion, through the flat lands of Utah and into the bright red colored hills of Moab.
Our trip was not complete without our stop at the filling station to maintain Road Hazard’s belly full at all times. We only had to fill it up with a ¼ tank to get the tank full again. But at $4.69 a gallon and having to put in 30 gallons we have both become numb with the whole experience. It’s better to not really worry and think too much about it because there is really nothing that we can do.
Our first impression of Moab is that it is a town of people that love the outdoors. Here is a place that is the “Mecca” for mountain biking, ATV’s, off roading, white water rafting and hiking. In this town if you don’t have a 4WD truck than you must be a tourist.
Yesterday evening we strolled down Main Street that is lined with small shops selling the usual wears for tourists. There are also many “Adventure” stores that offer many types of tours and, of course, your restaurants and bars. The interesting thing about Utah is that you can’t walk into a bar and just have a drink. You must order some food as well. If it is a Private Bar than you could just have a drink but you need to become a member. The drinking laws in this state are weird. We sat at the bar, which in Utah is called a counter because bars are not legal, and had this great “counter-tender” to be "Utah'anly" correct. She drew out a map of places we should see that we wouldn’t find on the tourist maps. Can’t wait to check them out over this weekend.
